Blues legend BB King dies at 89

Blues legend BB King has died in Las Vegas at the age of 89, his attorney has said.

King, who inspired a generation of mainstream guitarists, died late on Thursday, triggering shockwaves across social media, with stars from the music world lining up to pay tribute.

The 15-time Grammy award winner was considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and influenced a generation of rock guitarists from Eric Clapton to Stevie Ray Vaughan, having released more than fifty albums and sold millions of records worldwide.

Riley B King was born on September 16, 1925 in Itta Bena, Mississippi.

NSCDC arrests phone thief in Jigawa

The Jigawa Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps said it has arrested a suspected ring leader of cell phone snatchers in Dutse on Thursday.

The corps Commandant in the state, Mr. Muhammad Gidado, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Dutse on Friday that the suspect was arrested in Takur quarters.

Gidado said the suspect, Auwalu Musa, was arrested by NSCDC detectives after series of complaints of cell phones stealing from people in the area.

“The syndicate specialised in stealing expensive cell phones which they hide in refuse dumps, and after gathering a reasonable number of them, they take them to Kano for sale,” he said.

Gidado said upon investigation, the suspect made confessional statement which was corroborated by some complainants who had lost their cell phones to the hoodlums.

The commandant said three smart phones; BlackBerry, Samsung Galaxy and Nokia were recovered from the suspect.

He said the suspect would soon be charged to court.

Man sneezes out toy in his nose after 44 years

When Steve Easton was about seven years old, his parents noticed that the suction cup was missing from one of his toy darts, and they were worried he had inhaled or swallowed it. So they took him to the hospital, but doctors couldn't find anything. Yet for decades, he's suffered from sniffles and headaches he thought were a result of allergies.

Now, 44 years later, it turns out his childhood doctors were wrong. In what must have been a powerful sneeze, accompanied by what he calls "a very uncomfortable sensation", the suction cup emerged from the now 51-year-old Easton's nose.

"I started a sneezing fit and it came out of my left nostril,” he says. “I thought, 'What’s this? Where the hell has this come from?' and pulled out this rubber sucker." Easton called his mom, who told him about the hospital visit which he had apparently forgotten.

Doctors at the time said perhaps she was mistaken about her son inhaling the suction cup, she said. "I knew it wasn’t a mistake and it’s always worried me, and now it has suddenly shot out. We are all shocked."

Easton carried the suction cup for a while and shared his story with family and friends but has thrown it away now.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has given an account of how an undergraduate of the school, Mayowa Alaran pictured above, died last Thursday which resulted in major protests in the school. Fellow students of the deceased had alleged that their colleague who slumped while watching a match, passed away due to negligence by staff of the school's medical center. Speaking with newsmen in the school campus today May 13th, the Vice Chancellor debunked the students claims. What he said after the cut... "He carried out his normal activities earlier on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Very early in the day, he attended the Gymnastics practical with other students in his Department (7.00 – 9.00 a.m.). He later went to attend the Induction Programme organized for fresh students in his department. He attempted to participate in a football match between his Department of Health Education and Human Kinetics and the Department of Library and Archival Studies (LARIS) in the afternoon, but could not due to the fact that he did not train with his department’s team. He thereafter returned to the faculty to attend a GES class that held between4.00 – 6.00p.m.It was from here that he later returned to Independence Hall to watch a football match between Barcelona and Bayern Munich relayed in the Junior Common Room, JCR. The match started at 7.45 pmthat evening. A generator was used to supply electricity to the JCR due to power outage that evening. The generator was placed about 50 meters away from the JCR. The student sat in the front row and was facing a non-rotating standing fan in the JCR. At about 30 minutes into the football match, a student sitting next to him observed that he had slumped and was motionless.​ The concerned student promptly carried him out of the JCR for resuscitation with the assistance of some medical students around who gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation" he said.

Nigeria soldiers on deathrow allegedly being starved of food & water

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, soldiers who were sentenced to death for mutiny last year are allegedly being starved to death. The report below... 

Sahara Reporters has learnt of a covert plan to ‘kill’ a group of soldiers who were arrested late last year on charges of mutiny and attempted murder. The soldiers who have been held since September last year managed to reach out to the outside world via text messages, using the opportunity to reveal the conditions they are being held in.

In an initial message, they sent this text to our reporter: “Greetings sir, we are the 12 soldiers sentenced to death \others detained at CIC Apapa, Lagos. We are to inform you that following our denial of access to our families, councils & even access to fund [sic] to feed our families\pay our legal fees, that as you know, we had been concealing our cell phone to help us hear from counsels.

The phone was collected on 6\5\15, in view of this, we have not been fed, We are on hand-cuff & leg chain, we are kept naked [sic] & deprived of even drinking water. As it stands now sir, our lives  are at stake. We, therefore, plead with due respect that you intervene”.  Our reporter then followed up trying to call the number but met with no success. 

After a while, one of the accused reached our reporter again, this time in a voice call with a frantic message. “They are trying to kill us. They want to kill us” the voice said. He went on to inform our reporter that the authorities have noticed that they have access to a cell phone and have therefore resorted to using starving techniques as a form of punishment. He said they had not been fed nor given any water for about five days.

Last year the story broke of some 12 soldiers who were reined in by the military authorities for allegedly refusing to confront Boko Haram militants and firing at their commanding officer in the northeastern city of Maiduguri in May. The soldiers were reportedly angry after a convoy was ambushed on a road frequently targeted by Islamist Boko Haram militants and decided to protest to the authorities who they blamed for underequipped and underpaying them.

I killed to avenge friend’s death –Cultist

A 20-year old man, Joberi Pyagbara, now in police custody for his involvement in cult activities, has toldCity Newsthat he killed a member of a rival cult group and buried him in a remote community to conceal his deed. Pyagbara spoke toCity Newsshortly after he was paraded, together with 30 other cult members, by the police. He said he could not have a rival cult group kill his friends without fighting back. According to him, he identified one of the cult members that killed his friend around his Eken community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State and clubbed him to death. The young man, currently benefitting from the Federal Government Amnesty Programme, said killing, before he was arrested, gave him a sense of satisfaction as a member of a cult group. On how he was caught, he said he and other cult members were arrested during a rival cult war. He said, “I was arrested by the police because of cultism. It was during a community fight. Members of a cult group killed some of my friends and we decided to avenge and killed two. When the other cult group (Demua) came, they scattered the community. Many people ran away while they killed our friends. I belong to Dewell. “We don’t kill, but when anybody offends us, we go after him. They (other cult group) started it all by killing our members and we had to fight back. It is true that I killed one person and buried him in my community, Eken in Khana Local Government Area. I dug a small grave and did it (buried him). As a cultist, I felt satisfied when I killed those who killed my friends.” On why he went back to violence after embracing the Federal Government Amnesty Programme, Pyagbara said, “Though we surrendered our weapons when the amnesty programme came, when we noticed that a rival cult group was attacking us and killing some of our friends, we had to look for arms and decided to revenge. “I am 20 years old. I am part of the amnesty programme; I have never involved myself in crime after the amnesty, but the killings of my friends took me back to cultism. Those cult people cut our friends’ head and then we agreed that we must avenge.” Pyagbara, however, promised that he would turn a new leaf if he was released by the police, adding that bad company led him to crime. “I joined cultism in 2006. We always hustle to get money to finance the group. “I work as a conductor or collect money from commercial drivers at bus-stops. If I am freed, I will be a good person and will not join cultism again. I regret all my actions, especially the killings,” he added.

Save us from erosion, Akwa Ibom residents cry out

AKWA Ibom State residents, particularly those from Uyo, Itu, and the Oron local government areas have called on the state government to address the problems of erosion in the areas. They mentioned, particularly, Science Park Road, which links Calabar-Itu Road, saying erosion had made the road impassable. According to them, erosion has also damaged a section of Calabar-Itu Road. A resident of Atai Nung Itam in Itu Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Moses Akpan, appealed to the incoming administration to declare a state of emergency on erosion in Uyo, Itu, and Oron. Describing Uyo as a tableland, Akpan pointed out that it would be difficult for government to control erosion except serious steps were taken to curb the menace. He said a construction company, Nigerpest, had started work on the Science Park Road, but added that the project had been abandoned. Akpan appealed to the Akwa Ibom State Government to encourage the company to go back to work to prevent the points affected by gully erosion from total collapse. “Nigerpest has started working on the area, though the project appears to have been abandoned. We have to encourage the company to come back to work. The truth of the matter is that Uyo is a tableland. “The only thing the government can do is to declare a state of emergency in the area of erosion control in Uyo. That means the government has to embark on a serious construction of drainage channels, including underground drains to control the situation,” he said. Similarly, the University of Uyo is facing a 200-metre deep gully, which encroaches upon the university from three angles. This situation appears to be a threat to the existence of the institution. The gully has been said to be caving in at intervals in the past 20 years. It was learnt that the gully had destroyed the first Uyo Township Stadium, and was threatening the town campus. The rainy season will worsen the situation as the rate of expansion of the gully has increased with sections caving in on weekly basis. The university Vice Chancellor, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, had said that the university was at the cliff of the gully, and the entire campus is at risk. On July 9, 2013, the Trunk A road in Oron, the only road that links Oron to Uyo, Eket, and the rest of the state to other parts of the country, was completely cut off as a result of the erosion. The President-General, Oron Union, Okon Okon, told our correspondent in Oron on Sunday that many doing businesses in Oron had left for other towns within and outside the state as the collapsed road had caused hardship to both businessmen and residents. Okon stated that the Oron Trunk A Road was one of the earliest roads to be constructed by colonial masters. He added that since the construction of the road by the colonial masters, the Federal Government had not repaired or upgraded the road, which was the only route to Calabar. He had said, “This is the only road that links Oron to other parts of the state and the rest of Nigeria. It was the major route to Calabar, Cameroun, Gabon, and other republics. “I was there when the road collapsed. Our only means of accessing other places in Nigeria has been cut off. The development has necessitated increase in transport fare as transporters charge commuters almost triple the amount they used to pay. “Transporters can only access the other parts of the road through another community. Oron now is like a ghost town. People have left the place for other places within and outside the state as life has become unbearable.”
